In the following lesson, students listened to a reading from the historical fiction novel titled, "Between Shades of Gray" by Ruta Sepetys. This introduced them to a culture and a time period much different from theirs. Many of my students went on to read this book as an individual book choice after this lesson. I also implement texts from different cultures as often as I can. When students were reading and analyzing passages from different texts, I brought in a variety of authors from many different cultures. For example, students read an excerpt from "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi and also one from "All the Broken Pieces" by Ann E. Burg. Each of these stories tell about another culture. Also, in a poetry flood I've recently set up in my classroom, I included poets beyond the traditional classical poets. I've included works from many different poets across the globe.
